Investors Adam Quinton of Lucas Point Ventures and Claudia Iannazzo of Pereg Ventures pondered a question during their joint keynote at Inspirefest 2016: how are the women still missing in venture capital? As Quinton pointed out, women now earn more than half of master’s degrees and PhDs in the US, yet the proportion of women in venture capital stands at just 6pc. This figure was 10pc 15 years ago. “The number of women in the industry is declining at a very rapid rate,” lamented Iannazzo. Before Kirsten Green secured the first fund for her all-women venture capital firm Forerunner Ventures, she became intrigued with a yet-to-launch startup called Dollar Shave Club. So she borrowed $350,000 to invest in it before launch, and Dollar Shave recently sold for $1 billion. Forerunner also made a prescient bet on Jet.com, the shopping site that Walmart plans to buy for $3.3 billion. She is interviewed onstage at the Code Commerce conference in Las Vegas, October 25, 2016, by Recode co-founder and Executive Editor Kara Swisher. The second edition of the Code Commerce Series was held in conjunction with the Money20/20 conference. — Subscribe: https://goo.gl/FRleYo Check out our full video catalog: https://goo.gl/JeqE6e Follow Recode on Twitter: https://goo.gl/n4jVhu Follow Recode on Instagram: https://goo.gl/k8KXjH Read more: http://recode.net/ — Subscribe: https://goo.gl/FRleYo Check out our full video catalog: https://goo.gl/JeqE6e Follow Recode on Twitter: https://goo.gl/n4jVhu Follow Recode on Instagram: https://goo.gl/k8KXjH Read more: http://recode.net/

LAS VEGAS — A unit of CRRC, China's largest train manufacturer, has signed a deal with an American venture to build a high-speed rail between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Reuters reported. China Railway International USA said in a joint statement with XpressWest, a private venture proposal backed by Las Vegas-based hotel and casino developer Marnell Companies, that the project had an an initial capital of $100 million. Construction could begin as early as September 2016. The 230-mile line would connect Las Vegas, Victorville, Palmdale and Los Angeles. The train would travel at speeds up to 150 miles per hour, meaning passengers could travel from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in one hour and 20 minutes, comparing to four hours by car. XpressWest had been unable to secure a federal loan or investment from within the United States for the project. China Railway International USA, is owned by a consortium made up of subsidiaries from state firms China Railway Group, CRRC Corp, China State Construction Engineering Corporation and China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation. Gary Wong, a Hong Kong-based analyst at brokerage Guotai Junan, told Reuters he estimated the project could be worth about $5 billion. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A layover in Las Vegas, Nevada, doesn’t have to mean taking naps and eating airport food until your next flight. Instead of cozying up to your luggage for the next few hours, find out why they call Vegas the Entertainment Capital of the World. The McCarran International Airport is less than 3 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, which means you can venture over to the weird and wonderful attractions with time to spare. Surrounded by mountain ranges in southern Nevada, the Strip is packed to the brim with around-the-clock entertainment. Regardless of whether you’re visiting at 2 a.m. or 2 p.m., there’s always something going on, from stage performances to poker games. Many of the decked-out hotels feature buffets, casino floors, shops, nightclubs, and even amusement park rides. Meanwhile, the famous Vegas shows are worth all the hype, as you can witness acrobats defying gravity and magicians defying reality. Even if you only have one day in Vegas, that’s plenty of time to squeeze in a Sin City adventure. With 24 hours in Las Vegas, you can nosh on some shrimp cocktail, responsibly test out your poker face, and even catch the dancing Fountains of Bellagio. From Elvis impersonators to Eiffel Tower replicas, see it all during your layover in Vegas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: TWITTER: twitter.com/expedia FACEBOOK: facebook.com/expedia INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/expedia GOOGLE+: plus.google.com/+expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: Viewfinder.expedia.com

When Tristan Walker decided to raise venture capital money for his new startup, a health and beauty company that makes products for people of color, the fact that he was running a tech company — not a retail company — was key. “When I started, I said we’re a tech company. That’s bullshit,” Walker said at Recode’s Code Commerce conference in Las Vegas. “If you go to any kind of venture capital firm on Sand Hill Road and you say you want to build a retail business, you’re not going to raise any money. So to say that you’re a direct-to-consumer e-commerce business focused on subscriptions ... it allows us to really talk about how we kind of focused on tech.” That strategy worked. Walker’s startup, Walker & Company, has raised $33 million from well-known VC firms like Andreessen Horowitz and Google Ventures; its flagship brand Bevel, a line of razor blades and lotions for people with “coarse and curly hair,” is sold in major retail stores like Target. ------- Subscribe: https://goo.gl/FRleYo Check out our full video catalog: https://goo.gl/JeqE6e Follow Recode on Twitter: https://goo.gl/n4jVhu Follow Recode on Instagram: https://goo.gl/k8KXjH Read more: http://recode.net/
